The
Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a federal law that is administered by
the U.S. Department of Labor. The act allows a permanent full-time employee who
has been employed for at least 12 months to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid or
paid medical leave. The employee's job is protected during his or her absence,
and the employee cannot be discriminated against or wrongfully terminated for
taking medical leave. The employee can also take family and medical leave for
an immediate family member such as a spouse, child or parent.

Under
the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), an employee can take a period of
unpaid or paid leave due to a serious medical condition or pregnancy as well as
for the purpose of caring for an immediate family member. If an employer
discriminates against an employee because of this, it is violating the FMLA,
and legal action can be taken. If you believe your employer has discriminated
against you because you needed to take family or medical leave, consider
representation by a law firm.
